Aregbesola And Ajimobi Reject His Excellency Title

 Aregbesola
The Governor of the State of Osun, Mr Rauf Aregbesola as well as Oyo State’s, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, have both called for an end to the use of ‘His Excellency’ and ‘Executive’ to refer to the president, governors and other public office holders in the country.
This was made known at the opening ceremony of the 45th Builders Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), held at International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, on Tuesday.
The governors described the ‘His Excellency’ affixed to names of public office holders, as an unnecessary ego inflater which transfers “unnecessary extraordinary powers to public office holders.”
Aregbesola was the one who first raised the issue.
He said that if such a title should be used at all, it should be to deserving public officials, only after their tenure in office.
He also added that the use of ‘Executive’ to refer to governors was not constitutional and not part of the practice in democratic systems in the world.
He said:
“I do not think it is right to refer to those in government, because they hold governorship or presidential position, as ‘His Excellency’.
We copied our democratic system from the West and they hardly use such adjectives to qualify their public officers.
I have never seen President of America, Barack Obama referred to as His Excellency on any public occasion.
He is just Mr President and this does not diminish his authority.
Neither will you hear the Prime Minister of Britain or President of France referred to as His Excellency.
I do not know where we copied this from.
I accept that before independence, we had the British monarchy as our head of government.
To that extent we respect the monarch with such praise adjectives, like ‘His Majesty,’ but, royalties are not the same as elected officials.
You don’t have to describe a governor as executive governor. There is nowhere in the constitution, as amended, where the governor is expected to be called executive governor.
By virtue of the fact that we do not operate a parliamentary system, once you are a governor, you are an executive governor. Let us just call our governor, Mr Governor; president, Mr President, that is okay.”
Ajimobi also added:
“Just like we have Oriki, in our Igbo and Yoruba culture, where they continue to flatter, patronise us, it has become a culture in Nigeria that we feel spited if these adjectives are not used to describe us.
I would like to henceforth say that I should no more be called His Excellency, call me Abiola Ajimobi.”

Kachikwu Begs Supporters To Stop Congratulatory Adverts

Senator Attacks El-Rufai Over Harsh Policies

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has been accused of running a government that does not consider the interest of the people of the state, according to Shehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District.

Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, Sani said he will call Governor El-Rufai to order if he doesn’t deliver on his promises he made before his inauguration.

According to Sani, said Governor El-Rufai’s policies are harsh, inconsiderate and anti-people.

He said: “He is a technocrat, while I’m an activist and a revolutionary. So, my power base is the common people the masses who constitute my strength. They are the people I have lived with and fought for over the years. The way the governor is running the affairs of government in Kaduna state is the one which, if care is not taken, we will all sink.

“He has to take consideration of the fact that he met people that were impoverished, that were muscled, harassed and demoralized by the government of the PDP. So, first of all, they don’t need harsh policies that will further impoverish and alienate them. We need to carry them along, taking cognizance of the situation which we find them in. I fundamentally differ with him on that issue. For that reason, he has decided on his own not to even appoint people who identify with me in anyway and who are also seen to be from my camp.

“Kaduna is a place I have I lived all my life and since I came out of prison in 1998, I have never been out of Kaduna for more than two weeks and I’ve never been appointed to any public office which I will live in Abuja and not know what is happening in Kaduna. So, I can tell you that within Kaduna North, Kaduna South and metropolis of Kaduna, there is hardly any street that I don’t know anybody.

“He is running the state in such a way that he will end up ruining all of us, which I will not be part of. He has taken some steps which have only attracted anger from the general public against him.

“He is a governor, I’m also a senator. He is not bigger than me, neither am I bigger than him.

“So, as far as I’m concerned, whether El-Rufai is a governor or whatever, anything which he does that does not tally with what is supposed to be done, I will certainly tell him.”

Sunday Oliseh will return back to camp next week

The Super Eagles coach is expected to return to the country to begin plans for next month’s Afcon qualifier against Tanzania

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh will return to the country next week, in preparation for September’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.

Oliseh, alongside his assistant Jean Francois Loscuito, had meetings with the quartet of John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Brown Ideye and Victor Anichebe in London as he kick-started his reign as coach of the Super Eagles, Goal can report.

"Very constructive meeting with Chelsea & Super Eagles' Victor Moses. The team building continues," Oliseh wrote on his Twitter handle after Sunday’s game where Chelsea lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield game at Wembley Satdium.

Oliseh also stated that the clash against Tanzania is very crucial as he targets a win in his first game in Dar es Salaam on September 5.

“The match in Dar es Salaam is very, very crucial, not only because it will be my first match as Head Coach, but also because we have no choice other than to win. The three points are important for us to keep up the tempo in our group," Oliseh told the NFF’s website.

“We are on the same three points with Egypt, though they have scored a goal more. That is why we cannot afford any slip along the way.

"We will deal first with the match in Tanzania, and then we will start thinking about the CHAN qualifiers with Burkina Faso in October, and then the Fifa World Cup qualifying fixture in November.

"There is a lot of work. After these matches, we will now start working towards the two Afcon qualifying matches we have with the Pharaohs in March next year.”

Oliseh was appointed Nigeria coach last month following the sacking of former coach and team mate Stephen Keshi over allegations that he was not committed to his job.

Nigeria must be wary of Swaziland/Djibouti threat, says Mutiu Adepoju

As well as assessing the danger that both teams could pose in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, the former ex-international has called for adequate preparations for the Super Eagles

Nigeria must be wary of Swaziland/Djibouti threat, says Adepoju

Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju says the Super Eagles should be on alert to stop either Swaziland or Djibouti wreaking havoc when the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers begin.
The 2013 African champions got an easy draw in the second round of the race to Russia, but the former Real Sociedad midfielder feels Nigeria should be aware of the strength of their rivals heading into qualifier, while also calling for early preparation.
"I think it is a fair fixture. On paper, Djibouti and Swaziland are not very strong – and I don’t want us to think that way because if we do, we could be punished for it,” Adepoju told Goal.
"Early preparation for the Eagles is very essential here because it will put them in the right frame of mind.
"And it won’t be a bad idea playing teams like Cameroon and Senegal in friendly games as we hope to secure a place at the 2018 Fifa World Cup,” he added.
"At this point, we shouldn’t underrate any team because there are no longer minnows in world football, so we have to take both countries seriously.
"Mind you, everybody wants to beat Nigeria, so we have to prepare adequately and ensure we don’t make mistakes.
"Oliseh will definitely field the country’s best legs but we have to be very careful in our approach. Though, the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers precede our second round qualifier against either side, the preparation should be a continuous one,” he concluded.
The qualifying stages have been grouped into three phases with the lowest ranked countries on the continent to begin the preliminary stages from 5-13 October 2015. The winners of the first round will join the 27 countries, ranked highest in Africa in a home and away tie.
The winners after the second round will be paired into five groups consisting of four countries each and they will face each other in a home and away ties from October 3, 2016 to November 14, 2017, with each group winner automatically qualifying to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.
